Title: Best Friends
Series: Bleach
Characters: Rangiku, Gin, Hitsugaya
Pairings: Gin x Matsumoto
Rating: G
Comment: O.o lol, this is the the nth drabble i've been writing about this pairing, but the thought of Ran-chan n Gin-kun after reading 'The 12 tasks of Mayuri Kurotsuchi' has those two running about for ages... And SS celebrates Christmas. Don't ask how, don't ask why...
Disclaimer: I'm not a guy. Therefore Bleach does not belong to me. However the story plot is mine.

It was a dark night. Almost like that night, except that there was no screaming, no tears, no beatings. Rangiku flipped around in her bed and stared out of the window.
Long ago, she chose this room as it had a perfect view of the night sky. She wasn't living in this room now, as she'd moved to the room reserved for fukutaichous. But sometimes, in nights like this, she'd wander the halls of the 10th division, looking for traces of her childhood friend, Gin. The room was exactly as she'd left it, courtesy of her Taichou, who knew that, under her happy exterior, she had deep, dark secrets, that she pained to remember. The room, was a place for her to retreat to, when feelings overwhelmed her, for it was in an isolated corner of the Division quarters.
Rangiku allowed herself a small smile. She'd only been a fukutaichou for only a short while now, having only gained the position 2 months after Gin was promoted to Taichou in the 3rd Division. She was glad of his achievements, but somehow, it made him... different. He talked less of of his problems now, even though he had many, and when they were together, he avoided topics that revolved around love. Especially love. Rangiku knew that the feeling was mutual, that they loved each other, but... something held Gin back, and it became worse... almost as if... he predicted that he would leave, one day. She never pressed him for answers, but the pain in her heart, was breaking her. Gin was her lover, saviour and best friend, all rolled into one, but she feared that he didn't feel that way about her anymore. She knew that she'd lost him, the moment that he said he had become a Taichou.
He was so distant, she thought.
She turned to stare out of the window, absentmindedly fingering the necklace around her neck. It had been given to her when Gin learnt of her promotion.
A present for my Ran-chan, he had said, red eyes shining at her through their narrow slits. A true smile, since their days in the Rukongai. She never thought that she'd see it again. She had accepted it, and smiled, when Gin had offered to put it around her neck, and she was in bliss, when Gin's arms, pulled her into a tight embrace. But as quickly as it happened, he drew back.
Forget about me, he'd said.
Forget about me for my life is not my own. Then he'd left as quickly as he came, hopping through the window and up to the roof. She'd looked out and up, watching he's silhouette cut a lonely figure in the moon's face. She was in shock, and wondered, what he'd meant by his words. But her shouts at Gin only brought back a chuckle in the wind, one that made her shiver, and fear.
He'd never spoke to her since, only nodding at her when she passed by him. It felt as if he was trying to distance himself from her, and it hurt her greatly. Things did not improve, when her Taichou annouced that he was retiring. Somehow, she felt that she'd lost the only two people who knew her, in the short span of 2 years.
Sitting up, she brushed a stray strand of hair away from her face, breaking her train of depressing thoughts. It wouldn't do for the gorgeous Masumoto Rangiku to be depressed and brooding away. Her complexion would be ruined by wrinkles. After all, it wouldn't do to ignore the steady knocking at her door any longer. She checked the clock on the wall.
Damned, that person must be super determined to get someone, anyone out of bed at this unholy hour. Rangiku dragged a hand through her blonde locks, trying her best to look somewhat presentable to whatever lunatic was knocking at this unholy hour.
It's 3 hours since he started... No wonder i can't get any rest... Oh well, i'll blame it on that guy when the new taichou screams at me for sleeping tommorrow.Heaving an exaggerated sigh, she dragged her feet half-heartedly to the door, which seemed metres away, even though it was just across her room. Groaning, she pushed open the heavy oaked doors of her division, and shivered when a cold when ruffled her hair, and entered the division. She stared. She looked left and right. She even poked her head out of the door to take a better look.
'What the hell-----?! What kind of sick joke is this?!' Rangiku cursed under her breath. There. Was. No. One. Outside. The. Door.
Fuck whichever damn kid it was. I'll skin him alive when i get----'Hello?' A voice pipped out from nowhere. Wait. It seemed to come from below... her line of sight.
Rangiku took a step back, and was greeted by a short boy, barely into puberty, and just below her bustline.
'Oh.'
No wonder i couldn't see him. He's so short!! And cute~! Rangiku squealed.
'Are you Matsumoto Rangiku?' The small boy spoke again, voice unnaturally deep for such a young child. He was decked in the black of the official shinigami's uniform, apparently a bit oversized, for his sleeves were dragging alongside him on the floor.
'I am, you are?' Rangiku's curiosity was piqued. She was curious. He didn't seem like a child from noble birth. His haunted eyes were as much prove of his heritage as a Rukongai child, as much as Gin and she had, although they had learned to mask those eyes from others. He definitely wasn't an Academy student... He simply was too young. So how had he ended up on the doorsteps of the 10th division, at 4am in the morning no less?
'I'm the new Taichou of the 10th Division,' The boy looked up at her, haughtly. 'Not some lost child, Matsumoto-Fukutaichou.' The boy looked at her straight in the eye, trying to assert some authority on the situation, but failing badly. He shivered in the cold wind, and the bundle of something threatened to fall from his trembling grasp.
'You. Are kidding me right? Where are you from? I'll take you back to your mother.' Rangiku looked at the child.
There is no way this little brat is a Taichou. I'll bet my paperwork on that. But she was quickly proved wrong when the bundle of 'something' was tossed at her. She unrolled the rough paper wrapping and found herself staring at a pristine white haori. A letter was tied to the haori, and Rangiku quickly opened it and read.
'Rangiku, Toushirou Hitsugaya is now the Taichou for your Division. Your former Taichou has been recalled for an emergency mission, hence his sudden disappearence. Rest assured that this new Taichou is an important and approved decision on his and my part. It is important that he is settled down as soon as possible, and hence i hope that you would facilitate this. This may seem adrupt to you, and we are sorry for not being able to tell you earlier. However, as there have been troubles brewing in Soul Society, and we are unwilling to risk another possible Taichou. I'm sure that you are aware that somethiing has been threatening our existence recently, and rest assured, that is what your Taichou has been sent to find out. This is all that i may tell you at the moment, and as of now, you know more than anybody else. Something is brewing in Gotei 13, and i fear that there may be traitors amongst us. I am telling you this, because it will implicate you in the end. Beware and be on your guard. I trust you, because i know that you can be trusted. In the future, all hell will seem to break lose. I wanted you to know that all that is done is to protect the soverignity of Seireitei, and nothing else. Matsumoto-fukutaichou, remember, from now on, believe not what you see. General-Taichou, Yamamoto Genryuusai.Rangiku looked up from the piece of paper.
'Convinced?'
Rangiku's brain crashed for the 1st time that day.
